Baby Safety Answers!

Q: Are window guards on each window essential?

A: "A screen will not protect a child from falling out of a window," says Kathy Moineau, a window safety specialist, and founder of Safe Tots.

A check list:
  • Install a window guard on each window – starting when your child begins to pull himself up.
  • Open windows from the top.
  • Install latches to keep windows from opening far enough for a child to slip through.
  • Move furniture away from windows. Keep windowsills clear of things that would attract a child’s interest.
  • Shorten long cords for blinds and draperies and keep them out of your child’s reach – they could cause a child to be strangled.
